Video kavanagalu of N. Bhavani Shankar, First video poetry producer of India

Written poetry has its own features. We often use the word poetic. This poetic element is a quality. This can be found in a novel, story, painting, sculpture and other forms of art. This poetic element can be found in movies also. N. Bhavani Shankar, H.O.D of Kannada Department is a Educational film maker and has produced 130 films.

He learnt all the aspects of film making by himself. He has studied the nuances of video camera, computer editing, graphics, creating music on computer, script writing and direction. He has produced story films as well.

In this process he thought of producing a visual poem. He started making experiments. He called them Video poetry. So far he has produced 60 video poems. Features of his video poems are-a short written kannada poem comes on screen which gives some hint regarding the upcoming movie. There are no actors, no story. Generally his films are of 5 to 15 minutes duration. Music accompanies the visual poem on the screen.

Of late we made a search on the internet to know whether such a form exists. There are references on Video Poetry. The first Video Poetry producer is Gianni Toti of Italy (1980). But there are no references regarding Indians. N. Bhavanishankar’s first Video Poem came in 2004.

We think he is the first Video poetry producer of India.
